Ireland is a challenging but achievable destination for Ugandan travellers. Unlike Kenya, Uganda does not yet have a VFS Global centre for Ireland — all submissions go directly to the Irish Embassy in Nakasero, Kampala. This means appointment bookings are by email and the process is less predictable. A strong cover letter, bank-stamped statements, and clear Uganda ties are essential.
Key Warnings
From 1 June 2026, Ireland removed the right of appeal for Short Stay C visa refusals. Ugandan applicants who are refused must submit an entirely new application — no appeals are accepted. This makes a thorough, well-prepared first application more critical than ever.
Uganda is a yellow fever endemic country. Ireland REQUIRES a yellow fever certificate (ICVP/yellow card) from Ugandan travellers. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel — the vaccine takes 10 days to become effective. No vaccination, no entry.
There is no VFS Global for Ireland in Uganda — submit directly to the Irish Embassy in Kampala by appointment (email: [email protected]). The appointment system is less automated than VFS and can be slower. Email at least 3 months before your travel date.
Ireland is NOT part of the Schengen Area. An Irish visa gives no access to France, Germany, or other EU countries. If visiting mainland Europe, you need a separate Schengen visa.
Insider Tips
Request your Embassy appointment well in advance — 3 months minimum, 4 months for peak summer travel (June–August). The Embassy Kampala has limited appointment slots and does not have an online booking system like VFS.
Bank-stamped statements are non-negotiable. Visit your bank in person, ask specifically for stamped statements for the last 6 months, and collect them within 7 days of your appointment. Online printouts without a branch stamp are rejected every time.
Your cover letter must be typed and specific. Name each person you're visiting in Ireland, each hotel you're staying at, each attraction you're visiting each day, and each family member or job waiting for you in Uganda.
If you have previously visited the UK with a visa, mention this prominently. Ireland often looks favourably on demonstrated UK visa compliance as evidence of travel intent.
Self-employed Ugandans face additional scrutiny — bring business registration certificate, tax clearance, and 6 months of business bank account statements in addition to personal statements.
Step-by-Step Guide
Complete AVATS online application at visas.inis.ie
Go to visas.inis.ie and create an account. Complete the Short Stay 'C' application form — select 'Tourism/Visit'. Print and sign the application summary. Note your application reference number — it goes on all documents.
Email the Embassy to request an appointment
Email [email protected] with your application reference number, requested travel dates, and the purpose of your visit. Appointment wait times are typically 2–4 weeks. Do this at least 3 months before your planned travel date.
Write a strong typed cover letter
Type a specific letter explaining your day-by-day itinerary in Ireland, your accommodation, who you are meeting, and — most importantly — your ties to Uganda: your employer, salary, family members, property, and why you are definitely returning. Vague letters are the number one refusal reason.
Get bank-stamped statements from your bank
Visit your bank branch and request 6 months of account statements physically stamped by the branch. Collect them within a week of your Embassy appointment. Internet printouts without a bank stamp are not accepted.
Get your yellow fever vaccination
Ireland requires a yellow fever certificate from Ugandan travellers. Visit an approved yellow fever vaccination centre and get your ICVP (yellow card). Vaccination takes 10 days to become effective — plan accordingly. Your yellow card is valid for life.
Purchase travel insurance (EUR 30,000 minimum)
Buy travel insurance covering your full stay in Ireland with at least EUR 30,000 medical coverage.
Go to the Irish Embassy, 25 Yusuf Lule Road, Nakasero, Kampala, at your scheduled time. Bring all original documents plus photocopies of everything. The Embassy collects your biometrics (fingerprints + photo) and your visa fee (EUR 60 / ~UGX 261,000 for single entry). Submit your complete document pack.
Wait for decision (approximately 8–10 weeks)
The processing clock starts when the Embassy receives your file. You will be contacted by email or phone when a decision is made. From 1 June 2026, if refused, you have NO right of appeal — you must reapply from scratch. Do not buy non-refundable travel before you have the visa.
Collect your passport
Return to the Embassy to collect your passport, or confirm courier options when you apply. If refused, read the refusal notice carefully — the specific reason stated is what you must address in any new application.
Required Documents
Signed AVATS application summaryComplete the online application at visas.inis.ie first. Print, sign, and date the summary sheet. Your application reference number goes on all documents.
Typed cover letterMust be typed (not handwritten). Include your specific purpose of visit, full itinerary day by day, accommodation details, and — critically — your ties to Uganda: your employer, property owned, family members, financial commitments. Two recent passport photos (35×45mm)White background. Sign on the reverse and write your name and application reference.

Collect stamped statements within one week of your Embassy appointment. Show consistent income and a balance sufficient to fund your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Ugandans need a visa to visit Ireland?
Yes — Ugandan passport holders require a Short Stay 'C' Visit Visa for Ireland. There is no VFS Global centre for Ireland in Uganda. Applications are submitted directly to the Irish Embassy in Kampala (25 Yusuf Lule Road, Nakasero). First complete the online AVATS application at visas.inis.ie, then email [email protected] to book an appointment. The visa fee is EUR 60 (~UGX 261,000) for single entry.
Can Ugandans appeal an Irish visa refusal?
No — from 1 June 2026, Ireland removed the right of appeal for Short Stay C visa refusals. If your application is refused, you cannot appeal the decision. You must submit a completely new application from scratch, addressing the specific reason for refusal stated in the refusal letter. This makes thorough preparation of your first application especially critical.
Do Ugandans need a yellow fever certificate for Ireland?
Yes — Ireland requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate (ICVP/yellow card) from travellers coming from Uganda. Uganda is classified as a yellow fever endemic country. Get vaccinated at an approved centre at least 10 days before departure — the vaccine takes 10 days to become effective. Your yellow card is valid for life (the old 10-year expiry was removed in 2016). Travel without it means denial of entry.
How do Ugandans apply for an Ireland visa — is there a VFS office?
There is currently no VFS Global centre for Ireland in Uganda. Ugandan applicants submit directly to the Irish Embassy in Kampala (25 Yusuf Lule Road, Nakasero). The process: (1) complete the AVATS application at visas.inis.ie, (2) email [email protected] to request an appointment, (3) attend the Embassy appointment with your documents and biometrics. Email appointments typically take 2–4 weeks to get.
Does an Irish visa cover travel to Schengen countries?
No. Ireland is NOT part of the Schengen Area. An Irish visa only allows entry to Ireland — it gives no access to Germany, France, Spain, Italy, or any other EU Schengen country. If you want to combine Ireland with mainland Europe, you need two separate visas: an Irish Short Stay C visa and a Schengen visa.
