Applications from South Africa go to the Embassy of Senegal in Pretoria. Its address, fee and opening hours are not verified here — confirm them with the embassy before travelling to it. Senegal's consulate in Lyon lists South Africa as exempt for diplomatic and service passports only. Ask for the form, fee, document list and processing time.

⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate needed for your return to South Africa. South Africa is not a yellow fever endemic country. South African passport holders do not need a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Senegal when travelling directly from South Africa. Separately from entry to the destination: South Africa requires a valid yellow fever certificate from anyone arriving — including returning South Africans — who has been in, or transited through, a yellow fever risk country. Senegal is on that list. Without a certificate you can be refused entry or quarantined for up to six days at a South African port of entry. Older guides — this page included until October 2026 — describe Senegal as open to this passport without an embassy visa. The costliest failure is a refused boarding, not a refusal letter.
Fix: Get the visa from the mission before booking non-refundable travel, and check that any guide you follow names your passport specifically.
Consular officers read the itinerary against the bookings. Accommodation that does not cover the stay, or dates that do not match the flights, undercuts the application.
Fix: Confirmed accommodation for every night, a return ticket on the same dates and a short cover letter stating purpose and who is paying.
Applicants must show they can fund the stay. A single large deposit shortly before applying reads as arranged for the application.

Correction: South Africans need a visa for Senegal
Senegal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the African nationalities exempt from a visa for stays under three months — Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Togo and Tunisia — and states that every nationality not listed needs a visa. South Africa is not on the list. This page said until October 2026 that South Africans could visit visa-free for 90 days; that was wrong. Senegal's consulate in Lyon lists South Africa as exempt only for diplomatic and service passports.
