Ghana is one of the more accessible African destinations for Ugandan travellers — visa on arrival is available at Accra Kotoka International Airport under Ghana's open Africa Visa Policy. The e-visa option (apply online at gis.gov.gh) is strongly recommended to avoid airport queues. The most critical requirement is the yellow fever certificate — Ghana is extremely strict about this from Ugandan (and all East African) travellers, enforcing it at both check-in and immigration. Accra is also a growing hub for pan-African business and conferences.
Key Warnings
- Yellow fever vaccination is STRICTLY enforced. Ghana immigration will turn away travellers from Uganda without a valid yellow fever card. Airlines also enforce this — you will be denied boarding at Entebbe without the original yellow card. Do not travel to Ghana without it.
- Uganda is not an ECOWAS member, so Ugandan passport holders do NOT receive the automatic visa-free entry that ECOWAS nationals enjoy. You need a visa — either on arrival or e-visa. Make sure you apply or are prepared to pay the USD 50 VOA fee on arrival.
- Carry USD 50 in cash for the visa on arrival fee. While card payment is sometimes accepted at Accra KIA, cash is more reliable. Don't rely on airport ATMs for the fee.
Insider Tips
- Apply for the e-visa at gis.gov.gh at least 1 week before travel. With an approved e-visa, you bypass the visa on arrival queue at Accra airport — arrival queues can be long, especially on overnight flights. The e-visa is issued as a PDF for printing.
- Accra's Kotoka International Airport (ACC) connects well to Entebbe via Nairobi (NBO) on Kenya Airways, or direct on RwandAir via Kigali (KGL). Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) is another option. Total journey time is typically 7–12 hours.
- Ghana uses the Cedi (GHS) — carry USD to exchange on arrival or use ATMs in Accra. USD cards work at most Accra ATMs. Exchange rates at the airport are inferior to city rates.
Required Documents
-
Valid Ugandan passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended return date. Required at both VOA counter and for e-visa application.
-
Yellow fever vaccination certificate — STRICTLY MANDATORY
Ghana strictly enforces the yellow fever requirement for travellers arriving from Uganda. Uganda is a yellow fever endemic country. Present the original International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) at check-in for your flight to Ghana AND at immigration on arrival. Airlines will deny boarding without it, and Ghana immigration will turn travellers away. Get vaccinated at UVRI Entebbe or Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala.
-
Return flight ticket or onward travel proof
Confirmed booking showing your departure from Ghana. Immigration officers require evidence you plan to leave.
-
Accommodation confirmation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter for the full stay in Ghana.
-
Bank statement or proof of funds
Minimum USD 500–1,000 equivalent to cover your stay. May be requested by immigration on arrival.
Recommended (Optional)
-
USD 50 cash for visa on arrival fee
Carry sufficient USD cash as the VOA counter may prefer cash. Card payment is sometimes available but not guaranteed.
-
Invitation letter from Ghanaian host (if visiting friends/family or on business)
Business visit: include invitation letter from the Ghanaian company on company letterhead.
Health Requirements
⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate required. Ghana STRICTLY enforces yellow fever vaccination requirements. Uganda is a yellow fever endemic country, and Ghana requires all travellers from endemic countries to present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card). This is enforced at check-in — airlines flying to Ghana from East Africa will refuse to board passengers without a yellow fever card — AND at immigration on arrival in Accra. Do not attempt to travel without the original yellow card. Get vaccinated at UVRI Entebbe or Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala. The certificate is valid from 10 days after vaccination.
Why Applications Get Rejected
Ghana rejected 3% of applications. Avoid these mistakes:
-
Missing yellow fever certificate
Ghana immigration turns away travellers from Uganda without a valid yellow fever card. Airlines also enforce this before boarding.
Fix: Get vaccinated at UVRI Entebbe or Mulago Hospital. Carry the original yellow card — not a photocopy.
-
Insufficient funds / unable to demonstrate means of support
Immigration may ask to see proof of funds at the VOA counter.
Fix: Carry a bank statement or show a bank card with sufficient balance. USD 500–1,000 minimum recommended.
-
No return ticket
Ghana immigration requires evidence of onward travel.
Fix: Carry a confirmed return flight booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Ugandans need a visa for Ghana?

Uganda is not an ECOWAS member so Ugandans do not receive the automatic ECOWAS visa-free entry — a visa is needed. The visa on arrival costs approximately USD 50 (~185,000 UGX) for 30 days. An e-visa can also be applied for online at gis.gov.gh before travel. Yellow fever vaccination certificate is strictly required.
Do Ugandans need a yellow fever certificate to enter Ghana?
Yes — it is strictly enforced. Ghana requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate from all travellers arriving from Uganda, which is a yellow fever endemic country. Airlines will deny boarding at Entebbe without it, and Ghana immigration will refuse entry at Accra airport. Carry the original International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card). Get vaccinated at UVRI Entebbe or Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala. Allow at least 10 days after vaccination before travel.
Can Ugandans apply for a Ghana e-visa online?
