Ghana is an accessible destination for Ugandan travellers, but the way in changed on 25 May 2026. The visa on arrival at Kotoka was discontinued and replaced by a free Electronic Travel Authorisation for African Union nationals outside ECOWAS. Uganda is in that group. The USD 50 fee is gone — and so is the option of sorting it out on landing.

  • Ghana uses the Cedi (GHS) — carry USD to exchange on arrival or use ATMs in Accra. USD cards work at most Accra ATMs. Exchange rates at the airport are inferior to city rates.

  1. Apply for the ETA at evisa.gis.gov.gh

    Ghana's own portal. The ETA is free for African Union nationals — any site charging for it is reselling a government form.

  2. Upload your passport and travel details

    Passport with six months' validity, a photograph, confirmed return ticket and accommodation.

  3. Wait for approval before booking non-refundable travel

    Usually a few days. Approval must be in hand before departure — airlines check it at boarding.

  4. Carry the approval and your yellow fever card

    Ghana requires a yellow fever certificate on arrival. Print the ETA approval rather than relying on a phone at the counter.

  • Valid Ugandan passport Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended return date. Required at both VOA counter and for e-visa application.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate — STRICTLY MANDATORY Ghana strictly enforces the yellow fever requirement for travellers arriving from Uganda. Uganda is a yellow fever endemic country. Present the original International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) at check-in for your flight to Ghana AND at immigration on arrival. Airlines will deny boarding without it, and Ghana immigration will turn travellers away. Get vaccinated at UVRI Entebbe or Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala.
  • Return flight ticket or onward travel proof Confirmed booking showing your departure from Ghana. Immigration officers require evidence you plan to leave.
  • Accommodation confirmation Hotel booking or host invitation letter for the full stay in Ghana.
  • Bank statement or proof of funds Minimum USD 500–1,000 equivalent to cover your stay. May be requested by immigration on arrival.

Health Requirements

⚠️ Yellow Fever Certificate required. Ghana STRICTLY enforces yellow fever vaccination requirements. Uganda is a yellow fever endemic country, and Ghana requires all travellers from endemic countries to present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card). This is enforced at check-in — airlines flying to Ghana from East Africa will refuse to board passengers without a yellow fever card — AND at immigration on arrival in Accra. Do not attempt to travel without the original yellow card. Get vaccinated at UVRI Entebbe or Mulago National Referral Hospital, Kampala. The certificate is valid from 10 days after vaccination.

Ghana introduced a mandatory ETA and discontinued visa on arrival

From 25 May 2026 Ghana replaced its visa-free and visa-on-arrival arrangements with a digital pre-travel authorisation. Nationals of African Union member states outside ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States need a free Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for and approved before departure. ECOWAS and AES nationals remain visa-free with just a passport. Free does not mean automatic: without an approved ETA you will not be boarded.
