Entry rules for travellers from Uganda are changing — verify before you fly

Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026 after cases were imported from the DR Congo, and several countries introduced precautionary entry restrictions on arrivals from Uganda — the UAE suspended visas for arrivals from Uganda, the DR Congo and South Sudan from 6 June 2026. Uganda declared the outbreak contained on 5 July 2026 and asked for the restrictions to be lifted. Requirements on this route may have changed since we last checked, and some states are reviewing their rules week by week.

Tanzania is visa-free for Ugandans under the EAC Free Movement Protocol. The main entry points Ugandans use are the Mutukula land border (crossing into the Kagera region of Tanzania) or flying Entebbe–Dar es Salaam or Entebbe–Kilimanjaro. A passport and yellow fever card are the only essentials. Tanzania does not accept the Ugandan national ID — carry your passport.

  • Tanzania does NOT accept the Ugandan national ID — a valid passport is required for all Ugandan travelers entering Tanzania by any route.
  • Yellow fever certificate is mandatory. Uganda is endemic, so all Ugandan travelers must carry the original physical yellow card. Failure to present it can result in refusal of entry or compulsory on-site vaccination at your own cost.
  • Zanzibar (part of Tanzania) requires a separate immigration process — you will have your passport checked again upon arriving on the islands, even if you came via Dar es Salaam.

  • The Mutukula border (southwest Uganda into Tanzania's Kagera region) is the most common overland crossing. The crossing is generally smooth but can be slow when cargo trucks are backed up — plan for 1–2 hours.
  • For Ugandans heading to Zanzibar, the cheapest option is often to fly Entebbe–Dar es Salaam and take a ferry to Zanzibar (about 2 hours). Fast ferries depart from Dar es Salaam port.
  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the gateway to Arusha and the northern safari circuit — Tanzania's most visited national parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro) are easily accessible from there.

Vaccinate at Mulago National Referral Hospital, the Entebbe Airport Port Health Office, or another Ministry of Health-approved centre before travel.

Zanzibar's compulsory travel insurance does not apply to EAC citizens

Zanzibar has required inbound travel insurance from every visitor since 1 October 2024, USD 44 per adult and USD 22 for children aged 2 to 17. East African Community citizens are exempt with proper documentation, so Ugandan travellers do not pay it — carry your passport as proof of nationality rather than assuming the exemption is applied automatically.

Carry a passport for Tanzania — the EAC ID arrangement may not cover it

Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda accept each other's national identity cards as travel documents under the Northern Corridor Integration Projects scheme. Tanzania was not part of that arrangement, and current sources disagree about whether it now accepts the Ugandan national ID: one states plainly that it does not and requires a passport, another that all five EAC states now accept IDs. We could not resolve it, so travel with your passport — it is accepted either way, and being turned around at Mutukula over a document question is an expensive way to find out.
