Uganda declared an Ebola outbreak on 15 May 2026 after cases were imported from the DR Congo, and several countries introduced precautionary entry restrictions on arrivals from Uganda — the UAE suspended visas for arrivals from Uganda, the DR Congo and South Sudan from 6 June 2026. Uganda declared the outbreak contained on 5 July 2026 and asked for the restrictions to be lifted. Requirements on this route may have changed since we last checked, and some states are reviewing their rules week by week.

  • Île de Gorée — a small car-free island 20 minutes by ferry from Dakar — is one of West Africa's most moving historical sites. The House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) and the Door of No Return are deeply significant landmarks in African diaspora history. UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Dakar's music scene is extraordinary — Senegal is the birthplace of mbalax (Youssou N'Dour's genre). Live music venues at La Téranga, Just 4 U, and Thiossane (N'Dour's club) are essential evenings. Dakar also has excellent Senegalese cuisine: thiéboudienne (fish rice), yassa poulet, mafé.
  • Lac Rose (Retba) — a pink salt lake 35km from Dakar — is best visited in the dry season (November–June) when the pink colour is most intense. Salt harvesting by workers in the lake is a memorable sight. Drive via the Dakar–Thiès road, easily arranged as a day trip.

  1. Get yellow fever vaccination

    UVRI Entebbe or Mulago Hospital, Kampala. Yellow card at least 10 days old. Senegal checks it at Dakar Airport on arrival.

  2. Book flights via Addis Ababa to Dakar

    Ethiopian Airlines: Entebbe (EBB) → Addis Ababa (ADD) → Dakar Leopold Senghor (DSS). Total: ~10–12 hours. Also possible via Nairobi.

  3. Arrive visa-free — no queue, no fee

    Present passport and yellow card at Dakar Immigration. 90-day stamp issued on arrival.

  4. Explore Senegal

    Dakar (African Renaissance Monument, IFAN Museum), Île de Gorée (UNESCO slave island), Lac Rose (pink lake), Saly beach resort, Casamance region, Saint-Louis (UNESCO colonial city), Bassari Country (UNESCO).
